Women's Volleyball Topped By Christopher Newport, Virginia Wesleyan

Virginia Beach, Va. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell to RV Christopher Newport and RV Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday

The Ducks (11-4) dropped three close, hard-fought sets 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 to the Captains (10-4) before falling 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 21-25, 15-12 to Virginia Wesleyan (13-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens held 2-0 and 9-6 leads in the opening set, with senior Parker Adkins picking up three kills within those first nine points, but Christopher Newport used an 11-5 spurt to seize a 17-14 lead. The Ducks took six of the following nine points to knot things at 20-all, but four straight from CNY put them at set point. Stevens did not go away quietly, taking three straight points thanks in part to a kill from graduate student Elle Maggio and junior Vivian Lisboa, but a Samantha Dorn kill claimed the set for the Captains.

With Christopher Newport up 4-1 in the second, the Ducks answered with seven of the following nine markers, taking an 8-6 lead; senior Cleo Shannon had three kills during that spurt. Following an 8-2 CNU run, which put the Captains up 14-10, Stevens slowly worked its way back, cutting the deficit to 19-17 before back-to-back kills from Macy Burk started a set-clinching 6-0 run for Christopher Newport.

The back-and-forth play continued into and throughout the third set. Christopher Newport took the first three points before Stevens took seven of the next 10 for a 7-6 edge, with graduate student Meg Dion, Lisboa, and Adkins registering one kill apiece during that stretch. That 7-6 lead for the Ducks eventually became a 16-14 advantage for the Captains. As they had done all match, Stevens answered yet again, working their way back to grab a 23-22 lead, with first-year Sarah Bolduc notching a trio of kills over that stretch, her only three kills of the match. The Ducks would not be able to get any closer and fell 3-0.

Stevens reeled off the first three points against the Marlins, with Dion putting down the final point. A double-block by Shannon and Lisboa extended the lead to 8-4 before the hosts closed within one at 14-13. Stevens answered with four straight, as Shannon notched a kill and Bolduc and Dion teamed up for a rejection. The Marlins grabbed their first advantage of the day at 20-19, but two unforced errors switched the momentum back to the Ducks. With ties at 21 and 22, Lisboa and Shannon tallied consecutive kills to bring up set point. They were unsuccessful on the first one, but Shannon ended the first one with a kill from Molly Harris.

Stevens fell behind early in the second stanza but battled back to even at 8-8 on a Dion kill. A 7-2 run by the hosts stretched the gap to five before a Shannon kill from Adkins made it 17-15. VWU continued to pull away, closing the frame on an 8-2 run. Stevens led 7-4 in the third after consecutive block errors before the Marlins tied the period at seven. Dion slammed a kill to go up 8-7 before the hosts notched 11 straight points and claimed the third set to go up 2-1.

The Ducks went up 6-4 after a Lisboa kill before the Marlins inched in front 11-10. The back-and-forth battle waged on, with a 4-2 Stevens run putting them up 17-16. VWU got a kill to tie things at 17, but Bailey Axelrad served up four straight points to give Stevens the lead for good. The hosts got within three, but Dion forced the fifth frame with a kill.

Stevens raced out to a 3-0 lead before the hosts whittled away with the following five markers. Stevens showed resilience, and a Harris kill and an unforced error gave the Ducks an 8-7 lead as the two sides changed courts. Adkins tallied a kill to go up 10-9 before the Marlins answered three of the five points to tie things at 12. The Marlins went on to claim the final three points to win the match 3-2.
