No. 24 Field Hockey Topples Roanoke, 3-1

Salem, Va. – The No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team's depth was displayed Sunday afternoon as a trio of substitutes scored one goal apiece in a 3-1 win over Roanoke College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
As she did on Saturday against Washington and Lee, sophomore Jess Kopernick opened the scoring six minutes into the second quarter. Kopernick dribbled into the shooting circle and, with her back to the cage, turned and fired a shot right between the pads of Roanoke (4-4) goalkeeper Madison Wingerter. In the first half, Wingerter's counterpart, junior Lily Wierzbicki, stopped the Maroons' only on-target attempt.

With just over five minutes left in the third quarter, Stevens (6-4) doubled the lead off its seventh penalty corner of the game. Sophomore Kylee Scherer inserted to classmate Lauren Flynn, then from just outside the cage, tapped home
Flynn's ball for her first goal of the season. The Ducks were in firm control throughout the quarter, generating four penalty corners without yielding one and holding Roanoke without a shot on goal while attempting six.

With
just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Grace Vernarelli spoiled the shutout bid, scoring off a penalty corner for Roanoke. Despite being one player down due to a green card, Stevens put the game on ice with just over a minute left when junior Elizabeth Sullivan, making her inaugural appearance of the season, scored off a feed from senior Sarah Korczukowski

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • For the 19th straight game dating back to last season, junior Emilia Lopes played every minute.
  • Stevens held an opponent to fewer than four shots on goal for the fourth time this season, while its 9-2 advantage on penalty corners was the team's fourth-largest margin of the year.
  • The Ducks' 18 on-target attempts were their third-most of the season, behind only their 28 attempts on September 20 against Eastern and their 23 attempts in the season opener August 31 against Ramapo.
FROM THE FIELD
"Today was a full team win! We set up our game plan as a team and executed in a way that will continue to set us up for success moving forward. It was great to get some new goal scorers on the stat sheet as we head into the last few non-conference games.- Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz.

UP NEXT
