Field Hockey Topples Albright In Home Opener

Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team tallied three goals in the fourth quarter to knock off Albright College 3-0 on Saturday night.

Sarah Korczukowski, Lauren Flynn, and Julia Zatyko netted goals for Stevens (3-0), while Kelsey McTaggart made nine saves for Albright (0-3).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens had two shots sail wide in the first quarter, as both tries off corners by Korczukowski and Jess Kopernick missed the target. The Ducks nearly broke through in the 20th minute, but a Molly DiCampli try was cleared off the line by a Lions defender. Gabi Moroney was stopped twice late in the second stanza before the Lions had their first shot of the game with 2:54 left. Goalkeeper Lily Wierzbicki made a stop off a corner, and two sides entered the half tied at zero.

Stevens controlled the action, outshooting Albright 11-1 while holding an 8-1 edge in penalty corners.

The Ducks hunted for the opening tally, but the Lions registered defensive saves in the 34th and 45th minute to keep it tied. With seven ticks left in the third, Moroney had her try blocked away by the keeper, and the sides remained deadlocked entering the final 15 minutes.

After spending 46 minutes looking for the opening marker, Stevens found it at the 46:47 mark. Korczukowski reverse-chipped a shot past the goalkeeper, making it 1-0. Zatyko was stopped in the 53rd minute, and the Ducks were awarded a corner. Off the insertion, Flynn rifled a shot that deflected in off a Lions defender, doubling the lead. After the Ducks missed a penalty stroke in the 58th minute, Zatyko capped off the scoring with 25 seconds left. Cozza pushed a pass in front, and the graduate student deposited it into the back of the cage to seal the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Korczukowski led the Ducks with six shots, and Moroney added four.
• Flynn's goal was the first of her collegiate career after adding four assists during her first year on Castle Point.
• Zatyko's goal was her first since scoring against Misericordia on October 11, 2023, and the fourth of her Stevens career.

FROM THE FIELD
"Pleased with the outcome today but we were definitely exposed on some of our weak points. In these early season games, it's all about focusing on our game place and systems and make sure we are executing at a high level. We have done that in stretches and will continue to work on our consistency in our coming games. Overall, happy to see some new goal scorers on the season and solid mid-game adjustments!" – Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz.

UP NEXT
The Ducks host Rowan University on Wednesday, with the game time scheduled for 4 pm.
