Women's Volleyball Splits with Bowdoin, NYU

Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team split a pair of four-set matches Saturday, topping Bowdoin College before falling to No. 3 NYU to close out the Stevens Quad.

The Ducks (5-1) topped Bowdoin 25-18, 25-22, 15-25, and 25-13 but fell to NYU 25-22, 22-25, 24-26, and 20-25.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening frame against Bowdoin was close before Stevens pulled off an 8-1 run to grab a 12-5 edge. During the spurt,Bailey Axelrad had an ace as the Ducks took advantage of three unforced attack errors. Bowdoin closed to four after an ace to make it 18-14 but consecutive kills from Vivian Lisboa stretched the margin back to seven. Stevens claimed set one thanks to a service error, winning 25-18.

Trailing by four in the second period, Bowdoin reeled off five of six points to things at nine. Stevens quickly countered nine of the next 13 points, as Axelrad and Liz Patterson added aces. The Polar Bears fought back to level the contest at 18 but a pair of kills from Sarah Bolduc during a 6-2 spurt pushed Stevens back in the drivers seat. The newcomer Bolduc ended the second set, pinning down an assist from Molly Harris.

The guests went up 16-9 in the set three before three consecutive hitting errors by Bowdoin bought the gap to four at 16-13. Stevens could not get any closer, as the Polar Bears netted nine of the last 11 points to cut the deficit in half. A Lisboa block and Paulina Miller ace gave the Ducks a 13-6 advantage in set four before back-to-back kills from Ella Kraver opened a 4-0 run to push the score to double figures. The Ducks claimed the final three points of the set, as Meg Dion notched an ace and a bad set concluded the match.

The opening frame against NYU went back-and-forth, with neither side gaining much-footing. Stevens pulled in front 13-9 on a 5-0 run, as Bolduc netted two kills. Six of nine points went in favor of Stevens to extend the lead to 23-17 but the Violets fended off three set points. Elle Maggio, who brought up set point with a kill, slammed down a Harris set to give the Ducks the lead.

The Ducks led 14-8 in the second stanza, with Axelrad serving up two aces during a 6-0 rally. NYU trimmed the margin to two but consecutive kills from Cleo Shannon extended the lead back to four. NYU tied the match one set, notching eight of the final 10 points, with the two Stevens points coming on unforced errors.

NYU went in front 15-10 in the third before Stevens battled back with a 10-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. Lisboa and Kraver put away two kills a piece during the run. The Violets pulled even at 21 before two kills from Dion and a one from Shannon made it 24-22. NYU responded, notching the final four points on three attack errors to go up 2-1.

NYU took a 7-3 lead in the fourth period before Stevens got within one at 13-12 on two kills from Lisboa. A 7-2 NYU run gave them the cushion they needed for good, as Stevens was able to get within four on two occasions.
