Men’s Basketball Knocks Off Misericordia on Scholl’s Buzzer Beater

Hoboken, N.J. – Tommy Scholl knocked down a baseline fadeaway with less than one second remaining, giving the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team a 64-62 win over Misericordia in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action Saturday afternoon at Canavan Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars scored the game's first six points before Harmehar Chhabra got Stevens on the board with a three. Misericordia (7-6, 0-2 MACF) maintained a 2-3 possession lead throughout the early going, with Brendan Coughlan adding a pair of baskets for the Ducks and Jack Spellman pulling the Red and Gray within four, 13-9 just past the midway mark of the half.

The teams traded baskets with the lead fluctuating between four and seven until a Tommy School three-point play pulled Stevens within three, 20-17, at the 5:50 mark. The Cougars pushed the margin back to seven, 26-19, with three minutes left, but a Kyle Maddison three and a 6-0 run in 11 seconds courtesy of a Mike Goodall three and Coughlan three-point play knotted the contest at 28 at the half.

Misericordia seized a seven-point lead to open the second half, before layups from Chhabra and Goodall sandwiched around just the second made three of the season for Coughlan got Stevens back within two, 37-35.

After Stevens (10-3, 2-0 MACF) worked its way back to within three, 43-40, after the Cougars again went up six, a Goodall pullup and Logan Scott three-point play gave Stevens its lead of day, but Misericordia answered with an 8-2 run, and fouled out Jack Spellman in the process.

After a Chhabra free throw got the game back to a single possession, Scholl recorded a four-point possession when he missed a chance for a three-point play, but put back his own missed free throw, putting Stevens back up 52-51.

The teams traded the lead back and forth before Maddison answered a game-tying Misericordia three with one of his own, putting the Ducks up 59-56 with 4:23 left.

The teams combined for seven free throws over the next three minutes before Misericordia tied the game at 62 with 90 seconds left.

With the score still tied and less than 10 seconds left, Scholl took a feed on the right wing from Maddison, drove baseline and buried a contested fadeaway as the buzzer sounded. After a review put six-tenths of a second back on the clock, Misericordia's desperation heave sailed well wide of the mark as the clock, for the second time, hit all zeroes.
