No. 4 Men's Volleyball Sweeps St. Joseph's-Long Island In Season Opener

Patchogue, N.Y. – The No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team opened their 2025 campaign with a three-set victory over St. Joseph's-Long Island on Sunday afternoon.

The Ducks (1-0), who won 25-16, 25-18, and 25-21, hit .350 over the three sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 3-0 early in the first frame, the Ducks reeled off five consecutive points with Sebastian Huyke serving. Hunter Schmidt and Koby Sherman combined for a block to tie things at three before Sherman put down a Huyke set. After a side-out, Stevens posted six of the following eight points, with Schmidt, Sherman, and Carver Weirick tallying kills. The Golden Eagles closed to within six, but Stevens closed the opening set with four of the final five markers. Solo rejections from Phillip Bone and Schmidt brought up set point before Ryan Schmid closed out set one with a kill off a feed from Kevin Herbst.

The hosts took a 4-2 advantage in the second stanza before Stevens claimed the lead with four consecutive points, with two coming on Sherman kills. After ties at 7,8,9 and 10, the Golden Eagles went up on one at 11-10. After the Ducks regained the advantage, they pulled in front 19-14 on a 4-0 spurt. Tyler Hoke started the rally with a kill as three straight hitting errors by the hosts extended the lead. Stevens ended set two with a 6-2 run, with Hoke, Bone, and Sherman putting down kills.

Much like the opening two sets, Stevens fell behind in the third. They trailed 5-3 before a Sherman kill and a solo block from Weirick leveled the period at five. The two sides were even at 6,7,8,9,10, and 11 before St. Joseph's inched in front by four on the heels of a 7-3 run. Schmid halted the run and Stevens within two on a kill from Sherman. Stevens gained the lead back on a pair of attack errors to go up 21-20 before the hosts tied the frame at 21. A service error by the Golden Eagles started the match-clinching rally, with Weirick extending the lead to two on a kill. Sherman sealed the victory by delivering two aces, with the final one coming on match point.
