Buehring Collects 200th Win As No. 4 Men's Volleyball Sweeps

Union, N.J. – Head Coach Dan Buehring of the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team registered his 200th career win as the Ducks knocked off New Jersey City University and Kean University.

The Ducks (4-0) topped the Gothic Knights 25-15, 25-16, and 25-12 while knocking off the host Cougars 25-14, 25-19, and 25-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gothic Knights opened set one with four consecutive markers after Stevens opened the scoring on a kill from Greg Li. Ryan Schmid pinned down a Kevin Herbst set to level the first set at five, and Stevens used an 8-2 run to grab a 9-6 lead. During the spurt, Schmid had two kills as Alex Olcott, and Li notched kills. NJCU closed to within three at 13-10 after a setting error, but Stevens stretched the gap to eight after a 7-2 run, capped off with a double-block from Schmid and Esteban Schmitt. A double rejection from Li and Brandon Rogers brought up the set point, and a kill from Phu-Quy Ho ended set one at 25-15.

The second set was close in the opening stages before two consecutive attack errors from NJCU made it 8-4. The Ducks continued to take advantage of the NJCU miscues, extending the lead to seven at 16-9 after a service ace from Schmitt. The margin swelled to double figures on kills from Bennett Heydorn and Olcott, and back-to-back kills from newcomer Titus Rodz sealed set two.

In the third stanza, Stevens jumped out to a 6-3 advantage, finishing the run off a block from Schmitt and Brandon Rogers. Kills from Olcott and Koby Sherman kickstarted a 7-2 run to stretch the lead to eight at 14-6. The Gothic Knights closed to within six, but the gap grew back to 12 after three straight aces from Sherman, which ended a 6-0 run. Stevens tallied three of the final four markers, as Joshua Levandoske, Jesse Knuckles, and Heydorn registered kills.

The Ducks tallied the first seven points in the opening frame next against Kean, as Phillip Bone put down two kills during the opening run. The Cougars would be unable to break through, getting as close as six at 16-10. Carver Weirick paused the Kean comeback with a kill before Hunter Schmidt served up an ace to make it 18-10. Consecutive kills from Sherman and Weirick and a block from Tyler Hoke and Weirick made it 21-12 before Tyler Christensen delivered a set-sealing ace.

After dropping the first point of the second set, Stevens reeled off 10 of the next 12. Weirick had consecutive kills midway through the rally before Hoke punctuated the run with a solo rejection. Li and Sherman put down kills to stretch the lead to seven at 15-8, but the two sides traded the
next seven markers to keep it at a six-point lead. Kean rattled off three straight to close to within four at 18-14. After swapping points, Sherman and Hoke answered with back-to-back kills to bring the gap back to six. A Sherman kill off a feed from Sebastian Huyke brought up set point, and after the Cougars fended one, an attack by the Cougars handed the second frame to Stevens.

The Ducks jumped out to a 7-3 edge in the third period and pushed the lead to 12-4 on kills from Levandoske, Schmitt, and Rogers. Three straight unforced errors extended the gap to 10, and a kill from Schmitt pushed the scoreline to 21-10. After a service error handed the ball back to Kean, Stevens finalized the match with the final four markers. Levandoske ended the
match with a kill, as Li had back-to-back double blocks during the final run.
