DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Harmehar Chhabra and
Mike Goodall combined for 28 of their 34 points in the first half, leading the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team
to
an 83-62 win over Delaware Valley Wednesday evening in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Goodall and
Jack Spellman put Stevens (15-3, 7-0 MACF) up 5-0 in the first two minutes with a three-pointer and a layup. After Chhabra sandwiched two free throws around a pair of Delaware Valley (8-10, 3-4 MACF) baskets, Goodall made it 10-4 with a three-pointer, but the Aggies worked the margin back to one at 10-9, then again at 12-11.
Stevens came right back with eight straight courtesy of a
Kyle Maddison three, another Goodall three, and a Chhabra layup. Delaware Valley worked the margin back to four, 22-18, but jumpers from
Brendan Coughlan and Goodall, and five straight from Chhabra gave Stevens its first double-digit lead of the game, 31-21, at the 4:51 mark. Another Chhabra layup, an
Anthony Loscalzo three, and four combined free throws from Chhabra and
Tommy Scholl extended the advantage to 17 in the final 90 seconds, where it remained at the half thanks to Goodall's fourth three of the half in the final 15 seconds. The Goodall-Chhabra tandem ended the first half outscoring the Delaware Valley team (28-27).
The Aggies scored seven of the first nine points in the second half, working the margin down to 12, but layups from Spellman and Chhabra put the Ducks back up 16 with 16 minutes to play. After trading baskets over several minutes, with Stevens still up 16 at the 13:42 mark, three combined free throws from Maddison & Scholl plus a Maddison jumper gave the Red and Gray a 20-point lead with 12 minutes left.
From there,
Matt Leming went on a 6-0 run by himself, making all three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc, then knocking down a three the following possession, extending the lead to 65-40. The Aggies pulled back to with 20, but a three from Coughlan and five straight from
Logan Scott made it 73-47 at the 7:33 mark. The game of mini-runs continued, with the lead fluctuating between 21 and 26 points until the final two minutes when the Aggies finally worked the deficit under 20 for the first time since the 12:11 mark.
