Women's Basketball Downs Delaware Valley With Wire-to-Wire 65-50 Win

Hoboken, N.J. – Lucy Alberici scored a team-high 18 points, leading the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team past Delaware Valley, 65-50, in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action Wednesday night at Canavan Arena.

Alberici was one of five Ducks who finished with at least nine points and one of four who recorded at least five rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens (11-7, 5-2 MACF) held Delaware Valley scoreless for 5+ minutes to start, opening the game on a 10-0 run. Alberici scored on a second chance layup on the game's opening possession and Dorothy Loffredo converted on a layup the following possession. Those two made it 8-0 at the 7:06 mark with another basket each, and Olivia Schubiger made it 10-0 at the 4:55 mark, scoring off the Aggies' fifth turnover in the first five minutes. Delaware Valley finally broke the drought with five straight points to halve the Ducks' lead, but a jumper by Loffredo and two Alberici layups gave Stevens a 16-5 lead at the end of the quarter.

After Delaware Valley (3-15, 1-6 MACF) opened the second quarter scoring, Leyla Castro bookended a string of seven straight for Stevens with a three-pointer and layup off a steal, Dorothy Loffredo adding a layup between Castro's two buckets. The teams traded baskets over the following few minutes, Loffredo and Isabella Duval notching a layup and three-pointer, respectively.

With Stevens up 28-13, Duval (twice) and Castro put the Ducks up 24 with nine straight points off a trio of three-balls. Baskets from Fiona O'Boyle and Schubiger, plus a free throw by Katherine Bogutsky pushed the margin to 25 before a free throw and buzzer-beater three from the Aggies trimmed the Ducks lead to 21, 42-21, at the half.

Both teams started the third quarter cold, combining for just five points in the first 2:50 and eight points in the first 4:20, a free throw from Castro and three from Alberici accounting for the Ducks' points during that block, the only points for Stevens in the first 8:20 of the quarter as the Aggies sliced the Ducks' lead down to 10, 46-36. Alberici ended a 5+ minute scoring drought with a layup and Castro added a last-minute three, keeping Stevens in front by a dozen heading to the fourth.

Two Alberici free throws at the 8:05 mark ended a near two-minute scoring drought from both teams to open the fourth quarter. Delaware Valley got as close as 11, 54-43, at the 5:55 mark, but two Alberici free throws, a Schubiger jumper, and a Loffredo layup pushed the Stevens' lead back to 17 with less than four-and-a-half minutes to go. The Aggies did not draw closer than 15 the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Schubiger and Loffredo each just missed out on double-doubles; Schubiger finished with nine points and eight rebounds, Loffredo finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
