Hoboken, N.J. - Stevens Institute of Technology Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Russell Rogers announced Monday the promotions of John Maurizi, Meredith Spencer-Blaetz, and Jesse Heyburn.
Maurizi, who has been the Assistant Athletic Director for Campus Recreation and Athletics, moves up to Associate Athletic Director for Campus Recreation. Originally hired at Stevens in 1996 as the part-time Outdoor Recreation Coordinator, Maurizi was promoted to the position of Assistant Director of Campus Recreation in 1999 before being elevated to Director of Campus Recreation in July of 2000. An expert in all facets of intramural sports and recreation, Maurizi is responsible for developing, implementing, budgeting, and managing the Stevens Intramural Program, Campus Recreation, and Outdoor Recreation.
"John has been a very loyal and accomplished member of our team for many years," Rogers expressed. "The new title better recognizes the scope of work John is handling as the manager of a large and complex campus recreation program which encompasses many different areas and activities. His willingness to step up and take on additional work and responsibility without a second thought has provided an important boost for our department. I want to congratulate John and our campus recreation staff on the amazing level of success we have seen in programming and level of participation, along with the many administrative improvements that have been implemented."
In addition to her head coaching role of the field hockey program, Spencer-Blaetz moves to the administrative team as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Recruitment and Retention. In the new role, she will focus on recruitment of prospective student-athletes and diversity, equity, and inclusion programming and training. Additionally, Spencer-Blaetz will work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to further strengthen the relationship between the two departments while making the recruiting process more efficient and successful for all members of the coaching staff. On the field, Spencer-Blaetz became the program leader in victories this season and has guided the field hockey program to consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championships.
"Meredith's new title reflects her outstanding work and commitment to two critical areas of the department: recruitment and retention of student-athletes and diversity, equity, and inclusion programming and training," Rogers stated. "Meredith's motivation to make a difference in our department and in turn create a better experience for our student-athletes, coaches, and staff have been incredibly important and her new role now provides an avenue for her leadership to be even more effective."
Heyburn gains the title of Associate Head Athletic Trainer after serving as an Assistant Athletic Trainer since 2022. She provides athletic training services for women's volleyball, men's soccer, wrestling, softball, and golf, focusing on emergency medicine, injury prevention, management, and rehabilitation for student-athletes. "Jesse's promotion is critical as we strive to improve the retention and efficiency of our sports medicine office," Rogers said. "Jesse's knowledge base and self-initiative have been quite impressive during her time at Stevens. She is well prepared to step into this leadership role and provide Briana Wright, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, with the type of management skills necessary for Stevens Athletics to reach its goal of providing the best possible medical care for our student-athletes."
