No. 9 Field Hockey Clips LVC 2-1 in Conference Opener

Annville, Pa. – The No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team topped Lebanon Valley College 2–1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom opener on Saturday night.

Jess Kopernick and Brooke Hughes provided the offense for Stevens (10-2, 1-0 MAC Freedom), while Lily Wierzbicki made one third-quarter save to help preserve the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Shots by Sophia Cozza and Kopernick were turned away by LVC goalkeeper Ella Weidenhammer within the first five minutes of play, before Lauren Flynn nearly gave Stevens the lead in the sixth minute. Flynn's attempt rang off the post, keeping the game scoreless.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Ducks broke through in the 18th minute. Hughes gained possession in the circle and slipped a pass to Kopernick, who fired a shot past Weidenhammer to make it 1-0.

Weidenhammer kept it a one-goal game with saves on Molly DiCampli and Kopernick in the 20th and 21st minutes, before the home side leveled the contest at one off a corner in the 22nd. As time wound down in the opening half, Stevens regained the lead with just over four minutes remaining. Off a restart, Emilia Lopes sent an aerial ball into the circle, where Gabi Moroney controlled the pass. Moroney maneuvered around one defender and slid a low pass to Hughes, who buried the shot from close range to give the Ducks a 2-1 advantage.

The Dutchmen threatened early in the third, but Wierzbicki turned away a shot from Claire Weidenhammer just 10 seconds into the period. Neither side registered a shot on goal for the remainder of the quarter, and Cozza was denied by Weidenhammer off a corner in the 49th minute. LVC pulled its goalkeeper for an extra attacker with 1:15 remaining, but the Ducks held firm to secure the 2-1 win.
