HOBOKEN, N.J. – In the first meeting between the teams since last season's Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship Game, the No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team showcased its cornucopia of firepower in a 9-1 win Wednesday night from the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Eight different players scored for Stevens (11-2, 2-0 MACF) and six contributed at least one assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first quarter, despite six penalty corners and three shots on goal, Stevens' offense came alive in the second.
First,
Aleah Dinmore lifted one past Anna Doblovosky off a ball played in by
Kylee Scherer just past two minutes gone in the period. Less than a minute later,
Jess Kopernick knocked in a loose ball right in front of cage initially played in by Taylor Brooke. Shortly after the midway point of the period,
Brooke Hughes tapped in a pass in front off the stick of
Molly DiCampli. As the clock ticked under two minutes left in the quarter and first half, Brooks notched her second assist of the night when
Gabi Moroney corralled a pass into the box, and neatly put one past Doblovosky, capping the four-goal spurt that took just over 10 minutes.
After coming away empty on their first two corners of the second half, Scherer, after initially inserting, tapped a ball in just in front of the goal line, giving Brooks her third assist of the night. In the final two minutes of the quarter,
Lauren Flynn added on, putting home a lunging effort off a feed in front from
Elizabeth Sullivan.
After being held without a shot for more than 47 minutes, Arcadia finally got on the board early in the fourth, but
Ava Pelletier put Stevens back up six just over three minutes later, knocking home a cross in from
Kelly Nadzan. The offensive onslaught continued and culminated with goals from
Rosella Birns and Kopernick (her second) in the final two minutes.
