HOBOKEN, N.J. – Gabi Moroney scored a first half hat trick for the No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team in a 5-0 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom win Saturday afternoon from DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Before the match got underway, Stevens (12-2, 3-0 MACF) recognized the team's seven-member Class of 2026 – Moroney,
Maeryn Erdheim,
Elizabeth Sullivan,
Taylor Knox,
Emilia Lopes,
Maggie Neumann, and
Lily Wierzbicki -- with Senior Day ceremonies.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Moroney wasted no time getting the Ducks on the board, putting one in just over 90 seconds in off a Sophia Coxzza assist, adding her second of the day just past 10 minutes gone in the opening quarter, this time off a Lopes assist. Wierzbicki stopped the Monarchs' lone shot of the first 15 in the final seconds of the period.
Jenna Piantieri and
Molly DiCampli had second quarter shots stopped by King's goalie Emily Bollinger before the Cozza-to-Maroney wrapped the latter's monster first 30 minutes, with the Ducks carrying that 3-0 advantage to the half.
Brooke Hughes tacked on just shy of the midway point of the third quarter, converting off assists from Moroney and
Lauren Flynn.
Jess Kopernick tacked on the fifth goal of the day with just under three minutes left. Sullivan had three looks at her first goal of the year in the quarter, one blocked and two stopped by Bollinger, including a rocket just before the end-of-quarter horn.
Cozza and
Emilia Lopes had fourth quarter opportunities denied by Bollinger and Moroney was mere inches away from the program's first four-goal game since Dailyn Brook in 2014, but was denied by a King's defensive save in the final two minutes of the match.
