HOBOKEN, N.J. – Ryan O'Byrne scored his first collegiate goal and
Luke Carey added his first of the season for the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team in a physical 2-1 win over Arcadia Saturday night in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks had two chances in the opening, with
Omar Martinez firing one from the right side of the 18-yard box that Arcadia's Aden Razukiewicz got just enough of to keep out, and
Thomas Smith missing off the crossbar with a header off the ensuing corner kick.
In the 14
th minute, strong press from Stevens (4-2-6, 1-0-2), notably O'Byrne, forced a turnover just outside the 18-yard box. In one motion, the graduate student approached the loose ball and fired a low strike to the lower right corner.
Just over 10 minutes later, off another failed clearance from Arcadia,
Joseph Pinho played a ball from near the right corner flag to
Brian Babovic at the top of the 18-yard box, who one-timed a low ball that was curving just wide of the left post before Carey made a late charge and punched it in.
Sebastian Montoulieu was tested just once in net in the opening half, corralling a low, curving free kick in the 16
th minute.
Early in the second half,
Brian Babovic got a foot on a ball bound for goal, keeping the Stevens' two-goal lead intact, a play that became significantly more critical just over 10 minutes later when Arcadia finally cracked the scoresheet.
In all, Arcadia put four balls on goal in the second half, the last coming in the final minute when a ball into the box found its way to Alex Chyzowych, whose effort hit the foot of
Christian DeOliveira, and re-directed toward the top right corner where Montoulieu dove and punched it out for a corner that was delivered off-target, sealing the three points for the Ducks.

- Montoulieu allowed one goal (or fewer) for the seventh time this season, lowering his goal-against average to 1.19 and raising his save percentage to 0.683
