Center Valley, Pa. – Molly DiCampli had an assist and the game-winning goal for the No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team in a 2-1 double overtime victory over DeSales Wednesday night in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both
Lily Wierzbicki and Alyssa Schlossman were tested repeatedly in the first quarter.
Aleah Dinmore,
Brooke Hughes, and
Sophia Cozza all had shots stopped by Schlossman while DeSales kept Wierzbicki even busier, forcing five saves from the senior.
After an action-packed first quarter that featured seven penalty corners in addition to the nine total shots, both defenses turned up the pressure significantly in the second, with the teams combining for just two shots (neither one on-target) and just a single penalty corner, as the match remained scoreless heading into halftime.
Four minutes into the second half, off their second penalty corner of the period, the ball swung around left to right, finally making its way to
Taylor Brooks from DiCampli. From just inside the circle, Brooks fired one through a mass of Bulldogs and Ducks in front of cage, giving the Ducks the lead.
Stevens (13-2, 4-0 MACF) had a chance to double the lead just over a minute later with a penalty stroke, but Schlossman went full extension for the save. Brooks and DiCampli both had shots stopped late in the third, which proved all the more pivotal just over a minute into the fourth when DeSales knotted things at one.
Jess Kopernick and
Gabi Moroney had shots stopped in the final five minutes and Wierzbicki turned away the one DeSales shot on target in the final 13 minutes, as the match went into overtime.
After Schlossman stopped all eight Stevens shots in the first extra session, DiCampli fired a rocket by Schlossman just past two minutes gone in the second extra session for the win.
