HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology dropped a 1-0 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom match to Lebanon Valley Saturday afternoon from DeBaun Athletic Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sam Gjokaj was inches away from putting Stevens up 1-0 less than 10 minutes in, but defender Ben Kolarek stepped in and cleared after Gjokaj had initially beaten Dutchmen keeper Ryan Simonette. Stevens returned the favor 10 minutes later when a Dutchmen shot inside the six-yard box ricocheted off a slew of defenders just in front of goal.
Ryan O'Byrne ripped one from distance high early in the 16
th minute,
Lucas Mendes had a shot blocked &
Brian Babovic missed high off the ricochet in the 30
th, and
Ben Goldberg had an opportunity on a counter attack turned aside by Simonette in the 33
rd. Montoulieu was tested once in the opening half, when an attempted clear re-directed back toward goal, but the keeper was well-positioned for the save.
Gjokaj (blocked) and Goldberg (high) registered the two Stevens shot attempts through the first 30 minutes of the second half, while Montoulieu easily corralled the lone Lebanon Valley on-target attempt through that same time frame, a rainbow header that didn't come within six feet of the goal line.
Just minutes after Stevens (5-3-6, 2-1-2 MACF) missed a penalty kick, Lebanon Valley scored when a long free kick bounced through the box untouched with two minutes to play.
Before the match, Stevens honored
Eric Romero,
Thomas Smith,
Max Rokhsar,
Joseph Pinho,
Brian Babovic,
Ethan Hagen, Montoulieu, and Goldberg with Senior Day ceremonies, celebrating their accomplishments during their time in Hoboken.
