Men's Soccer Edged by Brandeis 2-1 in NCAA Tournament First Round

Waltham, Mass. – Sophomore Emerson Kekesi scored his 11th goal of the season, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team was clipped by Brandeis University 2-1 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

The Ducks conclude the season with a 9-4-6 record after capturing their fifth consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom crown last week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening 20 minutes were contested primarily in the midfield, with the host Judges taking the first two attempts. Lucas Mendes had the first shot on net for either team in the 25th minute, but his attempt was stopped by Tyler Correnti. Off a set piece in the 30th minute, Thomas Smith was denied by Correnti before Nico Beninda was turned away by Sebastian Montoulieu in the 32nd.

The Ducks broke through for the opening tally in the 37th minute. Ethan Hagen had a shot blocked, but the rebound caromed directly to Kekesi, who finished from a tight angle to give Stevens a 1-0 lead. Montoulieu again denied Beninda in the 39th minute, but Brandeis found the equalizer in the 42nd. Off a scrum on the left side of the goal, Elan Romo sent a cross to Beninda, who buried a right-footed try to draw level. Neither side put another shot on frame in the remaining moments as the teams entered halftime tied at 1.

Matthew Murillo registered the first attempt of the second half for Stevens, but Correnti was there to preserve the 1-1 scoreline. After both teams exchanged saves, Montoulieu made consecutive stops in the 70th minute to keep the match level. Each side continued to hunt for the go-ahead goal. Stevens was whistled for a foul in the attacking third, halting a promising sequence with Smith and Kekesi lurking. The home side pulled ahead with 6:59 remaining, as Keller Chamovitz tucked in a pass from Langston Byrd to make it 2-1.

Stevens pushed numbers forward over the final minutes, and Mendes nearly equalized in the 88th minute. His shot from the left side was punched over the bar by Correnti, and the Ducks were unable to convert on the ensuing corner kick.
