Madison, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team went 4-3 at the Drew Invitational on Sunday, highlighted by a decisive win over Haverford College.
The Ducks topped the Fords 20-7 and added victories over Detroit Mercy (16-11), Wheaton (Mass.) (24-3), and Drew (14-13), while falling to Denison (22-5), Wellesley (22-5), and NJIT (15-12). As a group, the epee squad went 39-55, foil finished 26-54, and sabre posted an 18-63 mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Epee led the way in the opening victory over Detroit Mercy, going 8-1 as both sabre and foil contributed four wins apiece.
Sofia Stoeckel and
Grace Hicks each went 2-0, while
Katherine Mooney added a 1-1 mark.
Ashlyn Leung paced sabre with a perfect 3-0 record and
Savleen Kaur chipped in one win. At foil,
Emily Zgombic secured the lone victory as
Akemi Rodriguez and
Julia DiPaolo also competed.
Against Wheaton, Hicks, Stoeckel, and Mooney each notched a win at epee, while Rodriguez and DiPaolo both went 2-1 at foil. Stoeckel was the lone multi-bout winner against Denison, finishing 2-1, as Hicks and newcomer
Madyson Gavilanes each went 1-2. All five wins against Wellesley came at epee, where Hicks and Stoeckel tallied two victories apiece and Gavilanes added one.
Foil and epee were both flawless in the dominant 20-7 triumph over Haverford, each posting a perfect 9-0 record. Rodriguez and DiPaolo went 3-0 at foil, with Zgombic contributing two wins. Newcomer
Selita Ikejibeh closed the weapon's effort at 1-0. On the epee side, Gavilanes, Hicks, and Stoeckel each went 3-0, while Leung and Kaur earned victories at sabre.
Leung closed out the day with two wins at sabre against NJIT. At foil, Ikejibeh, Rodriguez, and DiPaolo each went 2-1, while Hicks led epee with two victories and Mooney and Gavilanes added one apiece.
