Men's Basketball Edged by Scranton 83-80

Scranton, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team came up just short on Sunday afternoon, falling 83-80 to the University of Scranton in non-conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens opened the contest trading baskets with the Royals before finding a rhythm from the perimeter. Scholl connected on a pair of three-pointers during a stretch that saw the Ducks build a small cushion midway through the first half. Anthony Loscalzo sparked the offense off the bench, scoring eight first-half points as Stevens briefly pushed the lead to five. Scranton answered late, however, closing the half on a run to take a 42-39 edge into the break.

The second half turned into a possession-by-possession battle. The Royals pushed the margin to nine on a three-pointer just two minutes into the stanza, taking a 51-42 lead, before Stevens countered with an 11-0 spurt capped off by a Coughlan jumper. Coughlan scored four points during the run, while Matt Leming knocked down a three-pointer off a Maddison assist.

Neither side led by more than four over the next eight minutes before Scholl drained a three-pointer with 6:03 to play, putting Stevens ahead 72-68. That basket sparked a 7-0 run, giving the Ducks an eight-point advantage with 4:27 remaining. Scranton cut the deficit in half before Scholl hit a jumper to make it 78-72. The Royals then converted a pair of three-pointers on consecutive possessions, leveling the game at 78 with 2:01 left.

Scranton used a pair of free throws to take an 80-78 lead before Leming grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed three-pointer and drew a foul. Leming converted both free throws to tie the game once again. Will Marion knocked down a jumper with 47 seconds remaining to give the Royals an 82-80 edge, and Stevens was unable to convert on its ensuing possession. After Scranton went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line, Maddison had a chance to force overtime, but his three-pointer at the buzzer did not fall as the Royals secured the three-point victory.
