Mordi Sets Men's Track And Field Triple Jump Program Record At Crowell Invitational

West Point, N.Y. – First-year Jonathan Mordi broke a 45-year school record in the triple jump for the Stevens Institute of Technology men's track & field team on Saturday during the second and final day of the Army West Point-hosted Crowell (Indoor) Invitational.

The two-day event featured no team scoring and included competition from a heap of D-I and D-III institutions, including Albany, Siena, Manhattan, Columbia, Vassar, and multiple others.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With the previous school record of 13.57 meters standing since February of 1980, Mordi went 13.58 with his second jump of the day, good for fifth in the event and first among D-III competitors.

William Ladd was one of just five competitors to clear 1.91 meters in the high jump, with Mordi finishing right behind him, clearing 1.88.

In a 60-meter hurdle final featuring three Ducks and four D-I athletes, Joseph Perriello finished fifth in 8.91 seconds, Matthew Rudzinski took sixth in 9.5 seconds, and Konstantinos Georgiadis was seventh in 9.55 seconds.

Among a field of 22 finalists in the weight throw, Kane Perry took eighth with a top throw of 15.29 meters, the only non-Division I competitor to even clear 14.00 meters.

Sitting in third place in the heptathlon through Friday's events, Brandon Kiefer held there on Saturday, finishing 4th in the 60 meter hurdles, 2nd in the pole vault, and 5th in the 1,000 meters; Calvin Gibson climbed from ninth place to eighth thanks in large part to a 5th place finish in the hurdles, and Jimmy Johnson jumped from 12th to 10th, with top-eight finishes in the pole vault and 1,000 meters.

Michael Dao cleared a personal-best 4.15 in the pole vault (a top-five mark in program history) and Chris Persico tied his personal best of 3.95.

In the day's final event, the all first-year 4x400 meter relay team of Ian Rodriguez, Eduardo Neto, Steven Longo, and Luis Amezquita ran four sub-54 second legs for 3:33.15, good for third overall, behind just Army West Point and Manhattan.

UP NEXT
The team returns to New York next Friday for the Wagner College-hosted Seahawk Shootout on Staten Island, starting at 12:00 PM.
