Kenosha, Wis. – The No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team went 1-1 during the final day of the FrogJump Invitational on Saturday, falling 3-0 to No. 5 Juniata College and knocking off No. 12 Baldwin Wallace in five.

The Ducks (6-1) fell 25-20, 25-21, 30-28 to Juniata before outlasting Baldwin Wallace 23-25, 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 15-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Against Baldwin Wallace, Stevens fell behind 10-5 but responded with six of the next nine markers to get within two. Stevens clawed its way back and took their first lead of the match after a 6-1 spurt put them up 18-17. Ryan Schmid and Tyler Hoke put down kills while Hoke and Carver Weirick teamed up for a rejection. Greg Li notched a kill from Sebastian Huyke to snap a 22-22 tie, but the Yellowjackets tacked on the last three points to claim the set.

Stevens again trailed in the second stanza as Baldwin Wallace went up 7-4. The Ducks responded with three straight markers to even the contest at seven before the frame went back and forth, and neither got a stronghold. With BWU up 16-15, Joshua Levandoske put down a kill from Huyke to kickstart a 5-0 run. Stevens had three set points but weren't able to put Baldwin Wallace away, as the Yellowjackets went up one at 27-26. Hoke was the catalyst as Stevens claimed the final three points, notching a kill and a double-block with Schmid on set point.

No team
was able to lead by more than two until midway through the third period, as Baldwin Wallace went up 16-13 on an ace. Stevens got within multiple times, but a 4-1 run from BWU pushed the score to 24-20. Hoke and Bennett Heydorn recorded kills to trim the deficit to 24-23, but a kill ended the comeback and made it 2-1.

The Ducks capped off a 7-2 fourth-set run on an ace from Li, and an attack error from the Yellowjackets made it 11-6 Stevens. BWU responded with six consecutive points to jump back in front and continued to lead until Stevens notched six of the
next seven markers, capped off by an Alex Olcott ace. The Yellowjackets got within two, but a solo block from Li and a kill by Hoke clinched the fourth set, tying the match at two sets each.

Trailing 4-1 in the fifth and deciding frame, Stevens used a 7-1 spurt to take control. During the run, Levandoske and Heydorn had kills as the Ducks took advantage of five unforced errors. The Yellowjackets got as close as four before Li gave Stevens the comeback victory on a kill.

The Ducks jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the opening frame against Juniata, as Olcott had two kills, and Hoke and Phillip Bone registered kills as well. The Eagles used an 11-2 spurt to go up 17-12, but consecutive kills from Olcott and Schmid got Stevens as close as three at 18-15. Despite fending off two set points, Stevens
was unable to get any closer as a service error handed the opening frame to Juniata.

Juniata went up 5-1 in the second, with Stevens getting within a pair at 8-6 on a tandem block from Schmid and Li. The Eagles responded with five of the
next markers, extending the advantage to six. Three consecutive points from Stevens trimmed the gap to one, as Hoke and Koby Sherman bookended the rally with kills. After Stevens made it 22-21 on an attack error, the Eagles tallied the final three points to go up 2-0 in the match.

The final period went back and forth, with neither side able to take
full control. The Ducks took four of the five points to go up 10-8 before the Eagles leveled the frame at 10. After an additional 4-1 spurt courtesy of two Sherman kills and two unforced errors, Stevens grabbed a three-point lead at 14-11. A kill from Bone made it 24-22 Stevens before the Juniata countered with three points to inch back in front. The two teams traded points before Juniata finished the match with three of the last four points to complete the 3-0 win.
