No. 4 Men's Volleyball Tripped Up By No. 1 NYU

New York, N.Y. – The No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team fell in four sets to No. 1 New York University in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

Koby Sherman paced Stevens (8-2) with 14 kills as Emerson Evans had a match-high 19 for NYU (11-0). Stevens fell 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, and 25-21.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set went back and forth early, with neither side grabbing more than a two-point advantage. With the Ducks trailing 8-6, a service error handed the ball back to Stevens, and Sebastian Huyke reeled off three straight points capped off with a kill from Alex Olcott to go up 10-8. The Violets went up 18-15, but Stevens notched three consecutive markers to level things at 18 on an attack error. After ties at 19 and 20, NYU scored three of the next four to jump in front 23-21. Consecutive attack errors tied the frame at 23, but NYU registered the last two points to claim set one.

NYU reeled off five straight tallies in the second frame to go up 7-4, but the Ducks used a 5-1 spurt midway through the stanza to go up 16-15. Carver Weirick served up an ace, and a double-block by Olcott and Greg Li gave Stevens the one-point lead. A 6-3 run by the hosts put them back in front for good, and they ended set two with four of the last five points to go up 2-0 in the match.

The home side raced out to a 7-3 advantage in set three before a double block from Weirick and Tyler Hoke kick-started a 3-0 spurt to cut the deficit to one. Consecutive kills from Li, Weirick, and Sherman gave Stevens an 11-10 edge, but NYU responded with five straight points to go back in front. Stevens turned the tide in a big way, closing the third frame on a 10-2 run. Bennett Heydorn had three kills during the run, with Huyke serving an ace and Sherman putting the finishing touch on the set victory with a kill.

The fourth period was much like the first, with neither side able to take control. NYU went up three after a service ace, but consecutive kills from Sherman got the Ducks within one at 12-11. Three consecutive markers, including a kill and a solo block from Heydorn, tied things at 17. After NYU regained the lead, an Olcott kill trimmed the deficit to one at 21-20. NYU finished
off the match with four of the last five points, claiming the 3-1 victory.
