Softball Topped by Occidental In Season-Opening Series

Los Angeles, Calif. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team fell in both ends of their season-opening doubleheader against Occidental College on Sunday.

The Ducks (0-2) were topped 3-2 and 8-0 by the Tigers (4-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens broke through for the opening in their first inning of the 2025 campaign. Allison Mitloff led off the game with a walk and moved to third on a wild pitch and stolen base. Fellow first-year Riley Lawrence came up and drove Mitloff in with a single up the middle. Oxy leveled the game in the home half of the first, scoring on an error.

Kyra Fischer escaped a first and second, two-out jam in the second with a groundout before getting a flyout with runners on second and third in the third. Stevens regained the advantage in the top of the fourth, as Jessica Hsu laced a two-out to left field. Fischer helped out her own cause, singling up the middle and plating Hsu for the 2-1 lead. The advantage was short-lived, as a triple and bunt single tied the contest at two after four.

The Tigers picked up the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth. With two down, an RBI single to right-field made the score 3-2 in favor of the home side. Needing a run, the Ducks threatened in the top of the seventh. Elizabeth Kirstein and Emma Quattrochi walked to lead off the inning and put runners on first and second. After an out, Mitloff advanced the pair up a base with a sacrifice bunt. They could not do anything else, as a fly out to centerfield closed out game one.

Occidental grabbed a 1-0 lead after one inning in game two, scoring an unearned run after an error. Hsu got into scoring position in the second after leading off with a walk and moving to third on a wild pitch and sacrifice. The following two hitters were retired, leaving Hsu stranded at third base. The Tigers tacked on two additional runs in the second, tallying two runs on three hits, including a double to center.

Megan Curtis led off the third with a single to left, and a walk to Quattrochi had runners on first and second, but a double play quickly led to two outs. Hsu came in to pitch in the third and dispatched six of the first seven hitters she faced. Stevens
once again threatened in the fifth, putting runners on after a Curtis single and a walk to Emma Ruiz. A pop-up to second base closed out the frame, and the Ducks turned their first double play of the year in the fifth, with Lawrence making a catch and firing to Carmelita Murphy-Brown at first base. The Tigers closed out the game in the sixth, plating five runs on six hits.
