COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team opened their three-day, six-game NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Leadoff Classic slate with a 4-1 loss to St. John Fisher and a 10-2 defeat at the hands of Huntingdon Friday afternoon.
How it Happened – St. John Fisher
The Cardinals jumped on top in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer, but
Madison Subbiondo led off the top of the second with a home run, halving the deficit. The Ducks put a runner on second with one out later in the inning but could not push the tying run across.
After both sides went scoreless in the second and third, St. John Fisher (2-0) pushed across two more in the bottom of the fourth, expanding the lead to 4-1. Stevens (0-4) put five on base across the fifth, sixth, and seventh, but could not muster another run the rest of the way.
How it Happened – Huntingdon
With one out and runners on the corners in the first after singles by
Jessica Guerrero and
Emma Quattrochi, two passed balls and a wild pitch plated both runners without a ball leaving the infield, the Ducks taking the early 2-0 lead.
Huntingdon (10-0) had three singles in the first, but Stevens starter
Jessica Hsu kept the Hawks off the board with a bases-loaded strikeout to end the threat. The Hawks put a runner on third with one out in the third, but Hsu once again denied the Hawks the final 60 feet, inducing a groundout and inning-ending fly out.
With one out in the Stevens' fifth, Guerrero was hit by a pitch and pinch-runner
Adrianna Albano moved to second on a single by
Rachael Prescott. Both runners moved up on a groundout, leaving two in scoring position, but a groundout denied the Ducks a chance to tack on some insurance runs.
In the Huntingdon half of the inning, the Hawks tied the game, then with two out, five straight hitters reached safely, capped by a grand slam opening an 8-2 lead.
Hsu and
Carmelita Murphy-Brown opened the top of the sixth with back-to-back singles, each moving up 60 feet on a fielder's choice, but the deficit remained six after a pop out and strikeout, and Huntingdon closed out the run-rule win with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
