Maddison's, Spellman's Big Nights Not Enough for Men's Basketball Against Delaware Valley

HOBOKEN, N.J. -  Kyle Maddison had 23 points and Jack Spellman posted a 16-point, 21-rebound double-double, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team could not overcome a 47-point performance by Delaware Valley's Antonio Redding in a 78-72 Aggies' victory Wednesday night in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action at Canavan Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams started hot, combining for 21 points in the first four minutes. With the Ducks down 10-6, Maddison started a 13-0 run with his third three in the first four minutes. After Spellman gave Stevens (17-7, 9-4 MACF) its first lead with a layup at the 16:04 mark, Maddison pushed the advantage to 14-10 with a three-point play; Brendan Coughlan and Maddison (from three) capped the run, putting the Ducks up 19-10.

After the Aggies responded with nine straight to tie, the teams traded baskets over the following eight minutes, neither side holding more than a four-point lead until Tommy Scholl converted a four-point play for a 35-30 Stevens lead with 1:33 left, but Redding squared things at the half with a personal 5-0 run.

With the game still tied at 39 two minutes into the second half, the Aggies reeled off a 7-0 run, but two Scholl free throws, a Mike Goodall three, a Spellman layup, and a Maddison three put Stevens back on top, 49-46. Two Spellman free throws kept the Ducks in front 51-48, but Redding scored or assisted on 11 straight for the Aggies, who re-took a 59-51 lead.

Maddison pulled the Ducks back within 61-56 with a three and a pair of free throws, but Redding kept the Ducks from drawing any closer until a last-second Goodall three pulled the Ducks within four before Redding added his final two of the night at the foul line.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Maddison scored at least 20 points for the sixth time this season and matched his career-high with six three's.
  • Spellman's 21-rebound effort was his third 20+-board performance of the year, while his five rejections gave him three 10-point, 10-rebound, 5-block games this season.
  • With 13 more three-pointers, the Ducks hit 250 made from distance for the first time since the 2016-17 season (253).
