No. 17 Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Roger Williams

Bristol, R.I. – The No. 17 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team outscored Roger Williams University 9-1 in the second half en route to a 17-6 triumph over Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon.

Stefanie Sellitto tallied five goals as Emily Leiby and Maddie Hogan added four each for Stevens (2-0), and Mia Pantano had two for Roger Williams (0-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Roger Williams opened the scoring 90 seconds in, but Hogan completed a hat trick in less than three minutes, scoring the second and third goals 30 seconds apart, putting Stevens on top 3-1 with an even 10 minutes left in the opening quarter.

Three Stevens green cards each resulted in player-up goals and a 4-3 lead for the Hawks, but Leiby tied the game, and Sellitto put Stevens back in front, 5-4, at the end of the period. After Roger Williams evened things at five less than a minute into the second quarter, the teams went scoreless more than four-and-a-half minutes before a Roger Williams yellow card produced a player-up opportunity for the Ducks, which Anna Velarde took full advantage of, shooting Stevens back in front, 6-5.

Another yellow card a minute after Velarde's goal produced a second straight man-up goal for the Ducks, Leiby putting away her second of the day for a 7-5 lead. Hogan added her fourth a minute later on a free-position opportunity, extending the margin to 8-5, where the score remained at the end of the half.

The Ducks held a slim 13-12 advantage in shots, as goalkeeper Felicity Heilferty made four first-half stops.

Leiby opened second half scoring 1:34 into the second half off a pass from Emily Smart. Heilferty was the difference in the third quarter, turning away four Hawk tries in the third stanza, keeping them at bay. Riding the play of strong goaltending, Sellitto capped off the third quarter with the final two goals, including the final marker with 12 ticks remaining in the period.

Alison Lax extended the Stevens margin to 12-6 with a goal 1:49 into the fourth before Stevens netted a pair of markers 47 seconds apart. Sellitto potted a marker from Leiby at 10:11 before Smart converted a Leiby feed to extend the lead to 14-6. After a few scoreless minutes, the Ducks once scored in quick succession. Anna Velardi registered an unassisted tally with 5:55 left before Sellitto scored off a Velardi assist 1:17 later. Leiby capped off the polished off the scoring, adding the final marker with 2:43 left as Hana Yang picked up the helper.
