Baseball Drops D.C. Weekend Finale, 5-4, to Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Jack Reichlin, Frank Tonina, and Evan Pravato all had run-scoring hits as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team twice rallied from late deficits to tie, but fell, 5-4, to Catholic on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
The Ducks put two on with two out in the first and had a runner at second with one out in the third but could not push a run across in either instance. Stevens starter Jordan Fisse retired nine of the first 10 men he faced, yielding just a single through the first three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals put the first three runners of the inning on and still had the bases loaded with one out after pushing two across, but Fisse dodged further trouble with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

The game remained 2-0 into the sixth when, with two out and no one on, Chip Krese tripled to right-center and Eli Somers was intentionally walked, putting runners on the corners. After Reichlin plated Krese with a single to left, Tonina tied the game with a single to center.

In the seventh, again with two out and nobody on, Liam DeRubertis was hit by a pitch, Victor Schilleci walked, and Krese was hit by a pitch for the third time in two days, loading the bases, but a pop-up ended the threat.

After Catholic left a pair on in the bottom of the seventh, the Ducks' two-out, bases-empty magic continued in the eighth. After Dylan Fishbough was hit by a pitch and stole second, Pravato doubled him in, putting Stevens up 3-2.

The Cardinals flipped the score with a 2-run homer in the eighth, but the Ducks' resilience continued in the ninth. With one out, Schilleci singled and Krese walked, pushing pinch-runner Quinton Sterling to second. After a fly out moved Sterling to third, two balks pushed Sterling across with the tying run and put Krese on third with the go-ahead run, but a strikeout left the score knotted at four heading to the Catholic ninth.

The Cardinals loaded the bases with no one out and ended the game with a walk-off sacrifice fly to center.
