Men's Basketball Drops MAC Freedom Road Tilt at Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team led by as many as seven points in the first half, but Misericordia University shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the second half, including 60 percent from beyond the arc, erasing a three-point halftime deficit and handing the Ducks a 75-66 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom loss Saturday afternoon.

Mike Goodall finished with a team-high 20 points, Kyle Maddison and Tommy Scholl combined for 23.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Scholl opened the game with a three-pointer and, after four straight from Misericordia, Goodall made it 6-4 Ducks with another. After Misericordia tied it, Goodall made it 10-6 on a layup and pair of free throws. Back-to-baskets by Maddison pushed the lead to 14-8 before Misericordia took its first lead of the day following a 7-0 run.

Will Kwasigroch put Stevens (16-5, 8-2 MACF) back in front and, after Spellman answered a layup with a free throw to knot things at 17, Goodall and Matt Leming quickly put the Ducks back up six with a three apiece. The teams traded baskets over the following four minutes before Leming gave the Ducks their largest lead of the game, 30-23, at the 4:56 mark, the team's final points of the half.

Misericordia scored on its first seven possessions in the second half, opening a 45-36 advantage at the 15:45 mark. That lead ballooned to 20, 66-46, at the 7:36 mark when the Ducks bid began for a remarkable comeback.

Logan Scott and Madison shaved five points off with a tip-in and three-pointer; Goodall answered a Cougars layup with another three-pointer, and Scholl reeled off five straight following a Misericordia free throw, halving the initial 20-point margin down to just 10, 69-59 with 2:39 left. Brendan Coughlan and Scholl added a layup and three-pointer late, briefly pulling the Ducks within nine, 73-64, but Misericordia finished the game with 20 made free throws (to just eight for Stevens), including six in the closing stretch.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Goodall finished with at least three made three-pointers and 17+ points for the fourth straight game, his longest stretch hitting either mark this season.
  • Kwasigroch finished with a season-high six points, playing at least 10 minutes for just the second time this year.
  • Scholl finished with a team-high seven rebounds, just the fourth time this season someone other than Jack Spellman finished a game as the team leader.
