Baseball's Late Comeback Falls Short Against Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J.  – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team nearly pulled off an improbable comeback against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, but eventually dropped a Hudson County clash, 14-8.

How it Happened
Victor Schilleci had a one-out double in the first, but a strikeout and lineout ended inning. Rutgers put 10 unanswered on the board over the first three innings, including a pair of two-run homers. After the Scarlet Raiders tacked on run number 11 in the fifth, the Ducks went to work, putting three on the board in the sixth.

With two out and the bases empty, Schilleci doubled to left and came around to score on a Jack Reichlin single. After Eli Somers plated Reichlin with a double to left, Liam DeRubertis advanced all the way to third on a run-scoring error by the Rutgers-Newark left fielder. Stevens retired the Scarlet Raiders in order in the bottom of the sixth then came back with four more in the top of the seventh, halving the eight-run deficit.

Kieran O'Brien was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a groundout. Kevin Villares followed with a single, putting runners on the corners, and Aaron Wong plated O'Brien for the first run of the inning. After Schilleci was hit by a pitch to load the bases, both Villares and Wong (all the way from second) came in to score on a wild pitch; Schilleci scored the fourth and final run of the inning on an error by the Scarlet Raiders' center fielder.

That was as close as the Ducks got, as the Scarlet Raiders put up three more in the bottom of the seventh, with Villares adding an RBI double in the eighth for the final run of the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • Schilleci failed to draw a walk for the first time since the end of last season, but reached base at least twice for the fifth time in five games this year, finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles.
  • Reichlin made his fourth appearance and third start of the season, having hit safely in all four contests.
  • Making his third appearance of the year, Villares finished 2-for-2.
  • Marc Rivera, Brady Solomon, and Jacob Buurman all threw a scoreless inning in relief for the Red and Gray, Solomon retiring all three batters he faced.
Up Next: The Ducks welcome Montclair State to Dobbelaar Field on Tuesday, March 4, for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
