Pergola's, MacKnight's Big Days Not Enough for Men's Lacrosse Against Union

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team held a pair of multiple-goal leads in the first half, but a 6-1 fourth quarter advantage for Union College proved too much for the Ducks to overcome in a 17-11 final on Saturday afternoon at DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Finlay MacKnight notched his first hat trick of the season, Matthew Pergola recorded his third straight hat trick, and Tommy Robertozzi & Joseph Grippo each scored twice to lead the Stevens (5-1) attack.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 2-0 less than four minutes in, Stevens answered with four unanswered to close out the quarter. MacKnight scored two goals 15 seconds apart to tie the game at two. After out-shooting the Garnet Chargers 8-1 over the following five minutes, Pergola put the Ducks on top with a man-up goal, and MacKnight completed his hat trick with another man-up goal less than two minutes later.

The teams traded three-goal spurts to open the second quarter, Union taking a 5-4 lead before Grippo (twice) and Pergola put the Ducks back in front by two, 7-5. After Union knotted things back up at seven, Pergola added another man-up goal, but the Garnet Chargers scored almost immediately off the ensuing face-off, sending the teams to the locker room tied at eight.

With the Ducks facing a pair of two-goal deficits in the third quarter, Robertozzi twice pulled the Red and Gray back within one, with Union carrying an 11-10 lead to the fourth quarter.

That was as close as Stevens got, as Union scored the first two goals and final four goals of the final period while limiting Stevens to just nine shots in the quarter, the team's only quarter under 12 shots for the day.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Ducks scored four man-up goals, twice as many as any of their five games this season entering Saturday.
  • Stevens committed just nine turnovers, a season low.
  • Robertozzi notched his fifth multi-goal game of the season, matching his career total entering the year.
