HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team, No. 3 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, dropped a Top 5 showdown to No. 4 Springfield on Saturday night, falling in four sets (20-25, 26-24, 20-25, 17-25).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens (14-3) scored five of the first six and eight of the first 11 points of the evening. Five straight for the Pride leveled the set, and the score remained within one for the next 17 points; Sherman (thrice), Olcott, and Levandoske put away kills for Stevens during that stretch, but the Pride reeled off four straight, turning a 16-15 deficit into a 19-16 lead. Stevens twice worked the score back to within two down the stretch, but conceded four of the final five points as Springfield took the first.
Springfield took four of the first six points in the second, but the Ducks, after four ties, took the lead at 8-7. Springfield came right back with six of the next eight, re-taking the lead, 13-10. After trading more than a dozen points back and forth, Springfield took a 20-17 lead, but the Ducks reeled off five straight, seizing the lead back, 22-20. After the Pride tied at 22, the teams traded the next four points before back-to-back errors allowed the Ducks to level the match at one set each. Sherman finished the set with four kills, Olcott added three and Huyke pitched in two.
Springfield (13-2) took a 9-7 lead in the third and, despite the Ducks tying on six occasions, did not give the lead back, closing out the set 25-20, grabbing a 2-1 lead in the match. Sherman finished the set with six more kills, while Olcott and Huyke added two each.
The Ducks led 10-9 and 12-10 in the fourth, but an extended 15-5 Springfield run closed out the set and the match. Olcott put away three kills in the set and Levandoske put away a pair.
