Softball Splits On Final Day at NFCA Leadoff Classic

Ducks fall to Chicago; pick up run-rule win over LaGrange

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team wrapped NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Leadoff Classic competition with a Sunday split, falling 9-6 to the University of Chicago, 9-6, before picking up a 17-8, six-inning win over LaGrange College.

How it Happened – Chicago

The Ducks led 4-0 after three, including a three-spot in the third. After an Allison Mitloff single, a Jessica Guerrero walk, and Riley Lawrence sacrifice bunt, Emma Quattrochi plated Mitloff with a sacrifice fly. Madison Subbiondo followed with a single and Kyra Fischer capped the rally with a triple.

The Maroons got two back in the fourth, but committed two errors in the bottom of the frame, with the Ducks carrying a 5-2 lead to the fifth, but Chicago flipped the game with five in the inning.

Rachael Prescott homered in the sixth, pulling the Red and Gray back within one, but Chicago added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

How it Happened – LaGrange

LaGrange led 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, but three straight one-out doubles by Fischer, Prescott, and Subbiondo cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Panthers opened an 8-3 lead with four in the fifth, but the Ducks reeled off two straight innings for the ages. It started with the first four batters and nine of the first 10 reaching safely. Mitloff started it with a single, scored on a Guerrero triple, and Guerrero scored on a Lawrence single. After Lawrence stole second and Quattrochi reached on an error, with one out Prescott walked to load the bases, with singles from Subbiondo and Isabella Won scoring two, pulling the Ducks within a run.
Murphy-Brown tied the game with a single and Mitloff singled for the second time in the inning, this time plating Won and subbiondo with the gio-ahead runs.

After Fischer, making a relief appearance, stranded the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Quattrochi opened the bottom of the frame with a walk and advanced to third when Fischer reached on an error, Prescott plated Quattrochi with a single then, after a fly ouy, Won doubled, scoring Fischer, putting Stevens up 12-8.

Elizabeth Kirstein followed with a single, scoring Won & Prescott and Mitloff singled, leaving two on for Guerrero, who initiated the run-rule win with a three-run homer.

  • 17 runs vs. LaGrange the most in a game for the program since scoring 26 against Augsburg on March 12, 2017.
  • For the day:
    • Mitloff had five hits in six at-bats, scored three runs and drove in two more.
    • Guerrero finished the day with four runs and four RBI.
