WEEHAWKEN, N.J.. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped a home doubleheader Monday night to MIT, falling 16-2 in the first game and 9-2 in the second.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
MIT put five on the board in the first and third innings, opening an 11-0 lead. In the bottom of the third,
Emma Quattrochi and
Jessica Guerrero each reached on a walk to start the inning for Stevens (7-13). After a fielder's choice left Guerrero on second and
Allison Mitloff at first, with one out,
Megan Curtis loaded the bases with a single to left and
Jessica Hsu took full advantage, plating Guerrero and Mitloff with another single to left before stealing second. Despite the two in scoring position with one out, the Ducks' threat ended there.
The Engineers (8-2) put another five-spot on the board in the fifth and closed out the win in the bottom of the inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
Stevens had two on with no one out and the bases loaded with one out in the first, but could not push across a run.
With the Ducks trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third,
Megan Curtis led off the inning with a walk, then stole second ahead of a
Carmelita Murphy-Brown double the opposite way, with Curtis coming around to score Stevens' first run of the game. Pinch-runner
Adrianna Albano was later sacrificed to third with two out but eventually stranded there.
After MIT opened a 9-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, Guerrero led off with a single and Curtis replaced her at first following a fielder's choice. After Murphy-Brown reached on a fielder's choice to third, with Curtis safely advancing 60 feet, Curtis moved up another 60 feet, swiping third base. Hsu followed with a groundout to short, bringing in Curtis with the game's final run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hsu finished the twin-bill 3-for-6 with three RBIs and Curtis finished 2-for-4 with two walks
- Starting the second game at first base, Murphy-Brown was a vacuum defensively, recording four of her eight putouts unassisted without committing an error.
