Baseball Wins 9-8 Thriller at Montclair State on Schilleci's Ninth Inning Blast

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – Down to their final out, the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team rallied for a 9-8 win over Montclair State Tuesday afternoon for their fourth straight victory in one of the most exhilarating games of the season.

Victor Schilleci finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs, Dylan Fishbough went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Liam DeRubertis had four hits in five at-bats for Stevens.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks strung together two-out, bases empty rallies in each of the first two innings, building a three-run lead.

In the first, Fishbough singled to left, then a well-executed hit-and-run put Fishbough on third and DeRubertis on first with his 100th collegiate hit. After DeRubertis swiped second, Jack Reichlin drove in both runners with a hard-hit single to right-center.

In the second, Evan Pravato and Schilleci notched back-to-back singles ahead of Eli Somers, who singled down the right field, scoring Pravato.

With Stevens still leading in the fifth, the Ducks had runners on the corners with no one out after a Fishbough double and DeRubertis single, but a pop-up, strikeout, and groundout kept the Ducks from adding to a lead that Montclair State erased with four runs in the bottom of the inning, the big blow coming on a three-run homer with two out.

Another Montclair State (14-7) run in the sixth made it a 6-3 game, but the Ducks got two back in the seventh. DeRubertis started the rally with a leadoff homer and Reichlin followed with a walk. With two out and Reichlin still at first, Frank Tonina singled him to third and Pravato knocked him in, cutting the margin to 6-5.

The Ducks' deficit was pushed back to two in the seventh, but Stevens again pulled within a run in the eighth. Fishbough singled with one out and went first to third on DeRubertis' fourth hit of the game. Fishbough later scampered home when DeRubertis got caught up in a rundown between first and second.

In the ninth, pinch-hitters Luke Mahala and Robert Savely both singled with one out, setting the stage for Schilleci, who lifted a 1-1 offering well beyond the right field wall before sprinting around the bases in celebration.

Montclair State pushed the Ducks to their limit in the bottom of the inning, pulling back within a run and loading the bases with one out, but David Finch struck out back-to-back batters to end the thriller, and the Red Hawks' seven-game winning streak.
