Weehawken, N.J. – Senior
Jessica Guerrero delivered a ninth-inning walk-off single in the first game as the Stevens Institute of Technology swept a doubleheader against NYU on Tuesday.
The Ducks (13-13) extended their winning streak to six games with a 5-4 victory in nine innings, followed by a 3-1 win over the Violets (9-13).
HOW IT HAPPENED
NYU wasted no time, scoring in the top of the first inning. They manufactured the run with a single, a sacrifice bunt, a fielder's choice, and an RBI groundout. The Ducks responded in the bottom of the second, with
Rachael Prescott sparking the rally with a single. She advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Isabella Won, as the throw was dropped by the second baseman.
Elizabeth Kirstein followed with a single to center, scoring Prescott and tying the game at 1-1.
The Ducks turned a crucial double play in the third to escape a jam, as
Kyra Fischer induced a 4-3 double play with the bases loaded and one out. Stevens threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out on a single by
Emma Quattrochi and walks to Prescott and pinch-hitter
Carmelita Murphy-Brown. However, they were unable to capitalize, as a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the inning.
NYU put runners in scoring position in the fifth, reaching second and third via an error and a double. Fischer responded by retiring the next two batters with a strikeout and a comebacker to the circle. The Violets broke through in the sixth, plating two runs on a well-placed double down the right-field line. Stevens answered in the bottom half, with first-year
Jessica Hsu reaching on a throwing error. Prescott walked, and both runners advanced on a groundout by Won.
Madison Subbiondo, pinch-hitting for Kirstein, drove in a run with a groundout before
Riley Lawrence lined a single into center to tie the game at 3-3.
Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. The Ducks escaped trouble in the eighth when
Megan Curtis made a running catch and fired to Guerrero at second base for an inning-ending double play. NYU regained the lead in the ninth on a sacrifice fly, going up 4-3. In the bottom of the frame, Lawrence was placed on second and came around to score as
Allison Mitloff singled and advanced to third on a fielding error. Guerrero then lined a single to right field, sealing the walk-off victory for Stevens.
Much like the first game, NYU struck first in Game 2. A leadoff single, stolen base, and groundout set up a run, which scored on a short fly to shortstop. Hsu settled in, retiring 10 consecutive batters after the opening hit. The Ducks tied the game in the fourth, with Hsu leading off with a single and advancing to third on a single by Subbiondo, who took second on the throw. Won then executed a safety squeeze bunt, allowing Hsu to score with a clever slide to evade the tag.
Stevens took the lead in the fifth. Murphy-Brown reached on a fielder's choice with two outs, and Curtis re-entered to pinch-run. After stealing second, she scored when Quattrochi beat out an infield single, never stopping on the basepaths to give the Ducks a 2-1 advantage.
NYU threatened in the sixth, putting two runners on with a walk and a single, but Hsu induced a routine flyout to center to end the inning. Prescott led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, and pinch-runner Lillian Cournoyer advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kirstein. Won then delivered a single to center, bringing in Cournoyer and extending the lead to 3-1. The Violets put a runner on in the seventh, but Hsu capped off her complete-game effort with a strikeout, securing the sweep.
