Softball Takes Game Two In Split With Arcadia

Glenside, Pa. — The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team notched a split with Arcadia University on Friday afternoon.

Arcadia (8-18, 4-4 MAC Freedom) took the first game 2-1 before Stevens (14-14, 5-3 MAC Freedom) won 8-0 in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks broke through with an unearned tally in the second inning of Game 1, staging a two-out rally. Isabella Won reached on an infield hit, Elizabeth Kirstein walked, and Riley Lawrence reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Won to score.

Arcadia put runners on the corners in the second, but Kyra Fischer escaped the jam with a groundout to first. Fischer set down seven straight in the middle of the game, and Stevens strung together two hits in the sixth on knocks from Carmelita Murphy-Brown and Won. They were stranded as a strikeout ended the threat.

The Knights battled back to take their first lead of the day in the bottom of the sixth. Two singles and a pair of stolen bases put runners on second and third with one out, and consecutive knocks to right field gave Arcadia a 2-1 edge. Ella Tozduman relieved Fischer and got the final two outs, giving Stevens one final chance. They were unable to put a runner on base as Arcadia escaped with the 2-1 win.

Scoreless through the second contest, the Ducks opened the scoring in the third. Jessica Guerrero laced a one-out double to right field and moved to third on a groundout by Megan Curtis. Emma Quattrochi delivered a single through the left side, giving Stevens a 1-0 lead. Jessica Hsu set the Knights down in order in the fourth before the visitors erupted for four in the fifth.

Allison Mitloff got the rally started with an infield single before moving into scoring position on a stolen base. Guerrero singled and took second on the throw before Curtis dumped a single into right, scoring both. Quattrochi kept the hits coming, singling Curtis home on a hit to right. Stevens capped off the high-scoring frame as Rachael Prescott reached on an error.

The Knights filled the bases on two singles in the sixth, but Hsu induced a groundout to second to close out the inning. Stevens capped off the scoring in the seventh, adding a trio of runs. Guerrero and Curtis led off with singles and moved up a base on a wild pitch. Pinch-hitter Emma Ruiz stepped up and blasted a double to center, scoring a pair. Prescott singled up the middle after the Ruiz at-bat, scoring the senior from second. Hsu polished off the gem by setting the Knights down in order, cementing the shutout.
