Hoboken, N.J. – Graduate student
Frank Tonina hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team to an 8-7 triumph over DeSales University on Friday afternoon.
Dylan Fishbough and
Eli Somers each went 4-for-5 for Stevens (17-11, 12-1 MAC Freedom), while Travis Kerr reached base five times for DeSales (15-12, 7-6 MAC Freedom).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Scoreless after the first inning despite both teams putting two runners on base, the Bulldogs tallied three runs in the top of the second. They plated the opening run on a groundout before consecutive hits by Kerr and Jacob Rivera brought in two more runs. Stevens responded with three of their own in the home half of the frame.
Kevin Villares doubled and
Kieran O'Brien reached on a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners. Tonina drove in a run with a fly ball to left field before
Victor Schilleci tied the game with a two-run home run to dead center field.
DeSales retired eight straight batters after the second inning before Stevens took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Fishbough lined a one-out double to right-center field before
Liam DeRubertis hit a fly ball to right. The right fielder was camped under it, but the ball glanced off his glove. Fishbough scored easily, and after the ball was thrown away, DeRubertis alertly took third base.
Chip Krese extended the lead to two at 5-3 with a sacrifice fly to right.
Neither side scored in the sixth before DeSales drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh to get within one at 5-4.
Matt Villapiano settled down and notched a pair of strikeouts before a groundout ended the frame. DeSales strung together three straight singles in the ninth to tie the game at five against
David Finch before taking a 7-5 lead on a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Frank Parrotti came in for the Bulldogs and got the first out of the ninth before Schilleci worked a seven-pitch walk. Somers then drilled a double down the left-field line, advancing Schilleci to third. Fishbough drove an 0-2 pitch back up the middle, scoring both Schilleci and pinch-runner
Luke Mahala to even the game at seven. DeSales came up empty in the 10th, and
Colby Ching was hit by a pitch with one out. After a strikeout, Tonina laced a double to deep left field. As Ching came around third base, the relay throw deflected off the catcher's glove, allowing Ching to score from first.
