Softball Powers Past John Jay, 7-0 and 7-4

Union, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team swept a doubleheader against John Jay College on Wednesday.

The Ducks (18-16) took the opener 7-0 before claiming the second game 7-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Stevens broke through in the second. Isabella Won doubled to right, and Elizabeth Kirstein followed with a bunt single. Kirstein eventually came around to score on an error. A perfectly executed sacrifice by Riley Lawrence moved Kirstein to third, where Allison Mitloff drove her in with a sharp single through the left side, giving Stevens a 2–0 lead.

In the fifth, Jessica Guerrero doubled and was brought home by a Megan Curtis double to left-center. Curtis then advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Emma Quattrochi, extending the lead to 4–0. Stevens sealed the game in the sixth. After a leadoff single from Rachael Prescott and a sacrifice bunt by Won, Kirstein drew a walk to set the table for Madison Subbiondo, who came off the bench and crushed a three-run homer to right-center to make it 7–0.

In the top of the first of game two, Guerrero worked a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Curtis. After another walk to Quattrochi, Murphy-Brown came through with a single up the middle to drive in Guerrero, giving Stevens an early 1–0 advantage.

After two quick outs in the second, Mitloff laid down a bunt single and stole second. Guerrero reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Mitloff to score an unearned run. Curtis walked, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Quattrochi followed with a clutch two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Guerrero and Curtis to extend the lead to 4–0.

The Bloodhounds responded in the bottom of the second, scoring two unearned runs following a throwing error. In the third, Stevens struck again. Subbiondo led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Won moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Kirstein's RBI double to right-center. After a groundout advanced Kirstein to third, Mitloff delivered again with a single to left, plating another run and making it 6–2.

John Jay chipped away again in the third, scoring twice on a single up the middle. Stevens added their final run in the fourth. Curtis tripled to right field and scored on Murphy-Brown's second RBI single of the day, bringing the score to 7–4. Subbiondo then doubled, but Murphy-Brown was thrown out at home trying to score on the play.
