Sparks, Md. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team outscored the University of Mary Washington 9-1 over the final 30 minutes to extend their winning streak to six with a 14-6 triumph on Friday at the US Lacrosse Headquarters.
Emily Leiby scored five goals for Stevens (11-4), while Sadie Laughlin recorded two goals and an assist for Mary Washington (10-5).
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening quarter, Stevens overcame an early deficit after Mary Washington struck first.
Emily Leiby answered with a free-position goal to tie it at 1-1, and
Maddie Hogan scored moments later to give the Ducks the lead. After a brief Mary Washington equalizer, Leiby struck again on a strong individual effort. Sellitto added another tally to push Stevens ahead 4-3, but the Eagles knotted the game again before the quarter closed.
The second quarter was a tight, back-and-forth battle. Leiby notched her third goal of the game to keep things even at 5-5. Stevens' defense, led by goalie
Felicity Heilferty and caused turnovers from
Quincy Connell and
Eran Gleason, helped limit the Eagles' offensive opportunities. Despite a pair of Mary Washington goals, the Ducks responded efficiently, with Sellitto scoring off an assist from
Maddie Hogan to keep the momentum within reach.
Coming out of halftime trailing 6-5, Stevens wasted no time asserting control.
Emily Smart kicked off the third-quarter scoring with an assist from
Rebecca Guerra.
Anna Velardi followed suit shortly after to give the Ducks the lead. Sellitto added her second goal of the day, and Hogan extended the advantage to 9-6. Heilferty continued her strong play in goal with multiple clutch saves, including one off a free-position shot.
The fourth quarter saw Stevens shift into full control. Capitalizing on multiple man-up situations, Leiby struck twice more—including a free-position goal—to bring her total to five on the day.
Alina Friz added back-to-back goals, one off a free-position and another assisted by
Abby O'Brien.
Alison Lax joined the scoresheet with a late free-position goal, pushing the lead to 14-6 before the Eagles added a final tally.
