Women's Lacrosse Seals No. 1 Seed In MAC Freedom Tournament, Downing LVC 15-5

Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team locked up the No. 1 seed in next week's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament with a 15-5 win over Lebanon Valley College on Saturday.

The Ducks (13-4, 7-0 MAC Freedom) received three goals and an assist from Emily Leiby as LVC (12-5, 6-1 MAC Freedom) got two goals from Elizabeth Morgan.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After LVC struck first, Stevens responded quickly as Anna Velardi netted the Ducks' first goal to tie it at 1-1. Leiby netted back-to-back goals—one assisted by Emily Smart and another by Alison Lax—to push Stevens ahead 3-1. Leiby wasn't done, setting up Alison Lax for a free position goal to extend the lead to 4-1 by the end of the first.

Stevens kept the pressure up as Rebecca Guerra opened the second period with a free-position goal. Later, Maddie Hogan and Lax scored on free position shots to widen the gap to 7-2. Smart joined the scoring party, finishing a feed from Leiby to make it 8-2. Felicity Heilferty made another crucial stop on a free position
attempt to help Stevens maintain control as the Ducks entered halftime with an 8-2 lead.

Stevens outshot LVC 21-5 in the first half and went a perfect 11-for-11 on first-half clears.

Stevens came out flying after halftime. Leiby scored 64 seconds into the third period, as Hogan registered the assist. Soon after, Hogan found the net again, followed by Quincy Connell, scoring her third goal of the season. Stevens continued to ride the momentum, with Stefanie Sellitto scoring from an Anna Velardi assist and Alina Friz adding another unassisted marker. Stevens closed the period with Alison Murray scoring off another Velardi assist to make it 14-2.

Despite Lebanon Valley grabbing a couple of quick goals in the fourth, Stevens answered back when Hana Yang scored her third goal of the season, with Adeline Obitz earning an assist. The Stevens defense prevented LVC from getting any closer than 10, with Lauren Sullivan and Connell forcing turnovers late in the game to preserve the victory.
