Baseball Falls to Arcadia in MAC Freedom Championship, 7-6

Knights Claim League's NCAA Tournament Auto-Bid

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team was eliminated from the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship Series with a 7-6 loss Sunday afternoon to the Arcadia Knights from Dobbelaar Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Victor Schilleci wasted little time providing Stevens an early lead, homering off the scoreboard in right-center on the fifth pitch of the bottom of the first.

After Stevens (28-16) starter Jordan Fisse induced a double play ball to end the top of the second, the Ducks quickly sought to break the game open in the bottom of the inning. In a span of eight pitches, Quinton Sterling  led off with a moonshot home run to left, Kieran O'Brien reached on a ground-rule double, Frank Tonina delivered a line drive two-run homer to right-center, then, after Colby Ching was robbed of extra bases with a splendid catch by the Arcadia center fielder, Schilleci launched an absolute, no-doubt shot to center for his second of the game and a 5-0 Stevens lead.

Arcadia (28-15) got two runs back, unearned, on a single in the third, while the Ducks stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame. Following a scoreless fourth and fifth from both sides, the Knights jumped in front in the sixth on back-to-back two-run hits, tacking on an insurance run later in the inning for a 7-5 lead.

Chip Krese led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and Sterling singled, putting runners on the corners with nobody out, but a pickoff, infield fly, and groundout ended the threat without a run crossing the plate.

In the bottom of the ninth with Stevens still down two, Krese singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With the Ducks down to their final out, Frank Tonina kept the Ducks alive when he reached on a throwing error by the Arcadia third baseman, Krese scoring on the play, but a strikeout on the ensuing batter ended the game.

With Sunday's win and Saturday's 4-3 win in Game 1 of the Championship Series, Arcadia clinched the league's auto-bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • David Finch struck out a career-high six in a season-high 3.1 innings of work in relief.
  • Tonina homered for the second time in his last three games after going deep just one time in his first 27 appearances of the season.
