HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped the opening game of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Tournament, 8-4, to Lebanon Valley on Friday afternoon from Dobbelaar Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lebanon Valley (22-18-1) took a 1-0 lead two batters into the game following a walk and RBI double. From there, a pitcher's duel unfolded over the next 4+ innings, as Stevens' starter
Justin Doyle and Trey Dianna allowed a combined one runner past second base through five.
In the sixth, the Dutchmen took advantage of a two-out error, scoring two unearned runs, taking a 3-0 lead, but Stevens (26-14) staged a dramatic rally in the bottom of the inning.
With one out,
Victor Schilleci walked and
Eli Somers doubled him to third. After a
Dylan Fishbough sac fly,
Liam DeRubertis, hitless in his previous 17 at-bats, broke through in dramatic fashion, driving a game-tying two-run homer to the opposite field. With the Ducks' dugout still buzzing,
Chip Krese followed DeRubertis with a line drive big fly, putting Stevens on top for the first time all game.
After tying the game in the seventh, the Dutchmen went back-to-back opening the eighth, re-taking a two-run lead, 6-4. That lead doubled to 8-4 courtesy of a two-run homer in the ninth, with Stevens going down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
