Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team defeated the University of Scranton 4-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Thursday.
The Ducks (12-7) advanced to the Second Round for the fourth consecutive season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens secured the doubles point by winning two flights and leading in the third. At the No. 3 position,
Milagros Carbajal Diaz and
Sude Aytekin never trailed in a dominant 6-1 victory over Julia Nocentino and Kyleigh McNulty.
Alix Dry and
Stephanie Untermeyer, playing at the top of the lineup, fell behind 2-0 early but rebounded impressively, taking six of the next seven games to win 6-3 and clinch the doubles point. When play was halted,
Lorena Piegas and
Gigi Arenas held a 4-3 lead and had not trailed.
Aytekin was dominant at No. 2 singles, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win. After taking the first five games of the opening set, she responded to an early deficit in the second by winning six straight games to close out the match. Like Aytekin, Arenas cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot. The first-year standout jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set and then captured the final five games in the second.
Untermeyer clinched the match at No. 3 singles with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win. The junior never trailed, racing to a 4-0 lead in the first set and dominating the second by winning all six games, sealing Stevens' place in the Second Round. Dry led 6-0, 4-3 at the top of the lineup, while Carbajal Diaz was ahead 6-1, 3-2 at No. 4 when the match was clinched. Scranton held the advantage at No. 5, where Paige Hunt was leading 6-4, 0-1 against Piegas.
