No. 25 Fleld Hockey Topples No. 9 Rowan, 5-1

Glassboro, N.J. – The No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team toppled No. 9 Rowan University 5-1 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

The Ducks (4-0) knocked off a top-10 opponent for the second time this season, having defeated then-No. 10 York College 2-1 in the season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Rowan generated the first two shots of the contest, with the second turned aside by goalkeeper Lily Wierzbicki. Stevens capitalized on its first opportunity, breaking through when Taylor Brooks weaved into the circle and found Gabi Moroney, who slotted the shot past goalkeeper Mariah Juliano.

Wierzbicki denied another Prof attempt midway through the first quarter before the Ducks doubled their lead off a corner in the 10th minute. Lauren Flynn inserted to Jess Kopernick, whose shot was redirected past Juliano by Jenna Piantieri. Stevens capped its first-quarter surge with 31 seconds remaining, when Flynn inserted to Brooks on another corner, and the ensuing shot deflected off Brooke Hughes' stick and into the cage for a 3-0 lead.

Protecting the advantage, the Ducks limited Rowan to one shot in the second quarter and three in the third, taking the three-goal cushion into the final period. The Profs pressed in the fourth, outshooting Stevens 11-2. Wierzbicki denied Alexa Ronning on a penalty stroke in the 50th minute and turned away additional attempts in the 51st and 54th minutes.

Rowan finally broke through in the 55th minute, scoring off a rebound, but Stevens immediately re-established the margin just 19 seconds later. Piantieri tallied her second of the afternoon, dribbling past defenders before chipping a shot over Juliano. The Ducks closed the scoring in the 57th minute, when Kopernick set up Moroney for her second of the game.

  • Piantieri's two-goal outing marked the first multi-goal game of her career. Entering the season with no goals in 14 career appearances, the junior has now scored three times in four games.

  • Kopernick finished with two assists, her first multi-assist game since notching two against King's last year.
  • Hughes' tally was the first of her career.
