McCann Notches First Collegiate Goal as Women's Soccer Draws with TCNJ, 1-1

EWING, N.J. – Molly McCann scored her first collegiate goal during a 1-1 tie for the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team Wednesday night against The College of New Jersey.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks had the two best looks on goal for either side over the opening 45. First, in the 14th minute, Angela Dinh threaded a 30+-yard through ball to Alina Friz at the top right corner of the 18-yard box. Friz took a touch and fired low, but TCNJ (3-3-3) keeper Ellen Williams came way off her line and got her foot on the attempt, deflecting it wide.

Just under two minutes later, from nearly the same spot as Friz, Lauren Alley found herself with space and launched a strike headed for the top right corner, but Williams made a leaping save, knocking it over the crossbar.

Stevens (2-2-4) yielded a single on-target effort from distance in the first half, with a well-placed Kenny Donley making an easy save.

The second half was relatively quiet for each side until things picked up, dramatically, over a two-minute stretch bisecting the 70th minute. The shift started when McCann, who'd taken just four shots total in 43 collegiate matches entering the night, buried a tough angle shot from the left side of the six-yard box (extended) into the lower right corner in the 69th minute. The Ducks' lead was short-lived, however, as TCNJ came right back with an equalizer less than 90 seconds later.

Each side had opportunities for a tie-breaking goal late, with perhaps the most noteworthy chance for the Ducks coming in the final five minutes when Abby Davis had a look from inside 25 yards but missed just high.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Donley finished with five saves for the Ducks, her fourth 5+ save effort of the year, double her total from last season
  • Friz finished with a team-high two shots on goal
  • Taylor Truglia played the full 90 for the third straight match and Malia Chopra did so as well for the fourth time in her last five appearances
  • The Ducks have now matched their draws total from the 2023 and 2024 seasons combined; Wednesday also marked the first time in program history the team drew in three straight matches.
UP NEXT
The Ducks return home for a 3:00 kickoff Saturday, September 27, against York (Pa.), MAC Commonwealth runners-up each of the last four years.
