Hoboken, N.J. – The No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team improved to 8-0 on the year with a 2-0 victory over Washington & Lee University Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks struck quickly as
Lauren Flynn found the back of the cage just 2:37 into the contest, knocking home her own rebound after her initial attempt was cleared off the line. The Generals nearly leveled in the seventh minute, but Stevens goalkeeper
Lily Wierzbicki turned away a chance from Margaret Scheurer to preserve the lead. Neither side was able to generate another goal before halftime, and the Ducks carried a 1-0 margin into the break.
Stevens outshot W&L 6-3 in the opening half, with Generals' goalkeeper Julia McDonald collecting four saves.
The Ducks continued to press after halftime.
Gabi Moroney was denied in the 39th minute before Stevens doubled the advantage late in the third quarter. Off a corner, Flynn inserted to
Sophia Cozza, who slid the ball to
Taylor Brooks. Brooks' shot was redirected into the cage by
Aleah Dinmore for her third goal of the season.
The Ducks nearly added a third tally in the fourth, but McDonald turned aside attempts from both Brooks and Flynn. The Stevens defense held firm over the final frame, limiting Washington & Lee to no shots on goal and just three total attempts after halftime to secure the shutout.
