No. 10 Field Hockey Falls Late to No. 2 Christopher Newport, 2-1

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Seeking a third win over a Top 10 team this season, the No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team led No. 2 Christopher Newport for more than 20 minutes Saturday afternoon before falling 2-1.

Stevens, who've already defeated then-No. 10 York and then-No. 9 Rowan this year, became just the second team to hold a lead against the Captains (9-0) all season and the first to hold a lead in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams' defenses locked in early, conceding a single shot and a single corner (combined) through the first 21 minutes.

Just shy of the midway point of the second quarter, Stevens (8-1) broke through when Lauren Flynn knocked home a ball in front of the cage initially played in by Sophia Cozza, the first goal scored on CNU in nearly 400 minutes spanning eight matches. Goalkeeper Lily Wierzbicki made three first-half saves and Kylee Scherer made a defensive save in the final minute of the half to keep the Ducks in front.

After the two sides combined for just six shots and four penalty corners in the first half, Christopher Newport took seven shots and created three corners in the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter before finally breaking through with just over a minute on the clock, squaring things at one heading to the fourth.

Gabi Moroney had Stevens' best look of the fourth quarter, but her backhand effort missed just left. Ads the clock ticked under four minutes, CNU took advantage of another corner, knocking in the eventual game-winning goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Entering the season with one goal in 40 career contests, Flynn scored for the third straight match and fourth time this season; she's recorded at least one point in seven of the team's nine matches this year
  • Flynn also added a team-high third defensive save
  • Wierzbicki finished with eight saves, her second-highest total of the season
UP NEXT
The Ducks travel to William Paterson Friday, October 3 for a 6:00 start. Stevens has won 13 straight matchups between the two, including an 8-0 victory last season.
