HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team turned in a dominant performance Friday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex, defeating two-time reigning Skyline champion Manhattanville University 4-0 behind a balanced attack up front and strong defense in the back.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks pestered Manhattanville (2-2) keeper AJ Lucas early and often, taking six shots in the first 23 minutes before breaking through in the 27th. Max Rokhsar capitalized on a well-built sequence, finishing via assists from Thomas Smith and Omar Martinez. Stevens (1-1-1) did not yield an attempt from Manhattanville until the final 90 seconds of the half, carrying that 1-0 lead to the break.
Just past six minutes gone in the second half, Martinez doubled the lead off a feed from Lucas Mendes after the latter blocked an attempted long ball at midfield, dribbled in to about 30 yards out, then dropped off a pass for the former, who put one in the lower right corner past a diving attempt from Lucas. Less than two minutes later, Rokhsar notched his second goal of the night off a pair of well-placed passes from Mendes and Ethan Hagen.
In the 73rd minute, Joey Bucchere capped the Ducks' big night, drawing a penalty after Manhattanville again struggled to get the ball out of their own end. Ben Goldberg stepped up to take the PK and delivered a firm strike to the low right corner of the net.
Stevens remained sharp defensively throughout, with goalkeeper Sebastian Montoulieu only being called into action twice in 87 minutes before departing late for Aden Parikh, who made his debut as a Duck over the final 2:44.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The 4-0 final was the team's biggest margin of victory in a non-conference shutout since the 2018 season opener against current MAC Freedom foe FDU-Florham (4-0) when the Ducks were a member of the Empire 8.
- Rokhsar's brace was the first for the Ducks since Luca Campbell notched a pair against Delaware Valley last October 19.
- Mendes notched the first multi-assist effort for the Ducks since Campbell assisted on both goals in last season's NCAA Tournament win over Muhlenberg.
- In addition to Parikh, first-years Francesco Bonavita, Branden Cadigan, Joseph Conte, Sam Gjokaj, and Jordan Herrera all made their Ducks' debuts; sophomore Dion Ramani also logged his first minutes of the season.
