Women's Soccer Clipped by St. Joseph's - Long Island, 1-0

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Joseph's (L.I.) Saturday afternoon.

The Ducks outshot the Golden Eagles 8-3 and finished with a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks, but could not break through, taking their first loss of the season, leaving them 1-1-1 through the first three matches of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens controlled much of the action in the first half, taking four shots and earning a trifecta of corner kicks, blanking the Golden Eagles in both of those metrics; Sarah Wnorowski had a look from outside the 18-yard box less than five minutes in, but missed high. Alana Odom battled through some contact in the box for a left-footed opportunity in the final 90 seconds, but Kristin Vahle made the save for SJ-LI, keeping the match a scoreless draw headed to the half.

The second half started quietly for each side, with neither team generating a shot or corner kick through the first 16 minutes. Alina Friz had a chance to break through in the 64th minute, but hit the crossbar.

In the 72nd minute, Stevens goalkeeper Maria O'Brien made a leaping effort but could not keep a near-perfectly placed strike from the foot of SJ-LI's Sophia Cagnetto, which hit the post top-right, then crossed the goal line and bounced over just inside the left post.

Stevens' last strong scoring chance came in the 82nd when Odom re-directed a Kaitlyn Pettit header into the box toward the lower-left corner of the next, but Vahle sprawled out and made the save.
