HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team battled back from two goals down over the final 16 minutes against Swarthmore on Sunday afternoon, coming away with a 2-2 draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams had multiple opportunities in the early going, with Swarthmore (2-1-1) recording three shots and Stevens (1-1-2) recording four in the first 22 minutes. It was Swarthmore who struck first in the 29th minute on an own goal by the Ducks, as the Garnet took advantage of their fifth corner in a five-minute span.
With Swarthmore carrying that lead into the half, Stevens sought to equalize early in the second, peppering Colin Crowe with four shots in the first 10 minutes coming out of the locker room, but none found the back of the net.
In the 68th minute, Swarthmore took what seemed like a commanding 2-0 cushion, but Stevens responded with urgency. Just six minutes later, a remarkable solo run from Ethan Hagen covering more than half the pitch left the ball at the feet of Joey Bucchere. Bucchere dropped one off for Omar Martinez, who fired a left-footed strike across the box into the low right-corner.
With momentum swinging back in its favor, Stevens continued to press, and the breakthrough came again in the 81st minute. Lucas Mendes hit the underside of the crossbar from just outside the 18-yard box, with Thomas Smith taking advantage of a failed clearance from the Garnet backline to tap home the rebound to knot the match..
Both sides searched for a late winner, the most eye-opening coming from Smith in the 88th, when he let fly with a bicycle kick that Crowe snatched from just under the crossbar.
